What Side Effects May Occur?Side effects cannot be anticipated. The valsartan-atenolol combination was more antihypertensive than either component, but it did not lower the heart rate more than atenolol alone. Valsartan had no adverse effects on the reproductive performance of male or female rats at oral doses up to 200 mg/kg/day. This dose is 6 times the maximum recommended human dose on a mg/m basis. It is not known whether valsartan is excreted in human milk, but valsartan was excreted in the milk of lactating rats. There has been little experience with overdosage. However, the most likely results would be extremely low blood pressure and an abnormally slow or rapid heartbeat. The following additional adverse reactions have been reported in post-marketing experience: Hypersensitivity: There are rare reports of angioedema. Why Should Diovan Not Be Prescribed?Avoid both drugs if they cause an allergic reaction, and do not take Diovan HCT if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a Sulfa drug such as sulfamethoxazole. Diovan is a first-line therapy, which has a recommended starting dose of 80 mg once daily and will be available by prescription in capsule form. As soon as you find out that you're pregnant, stop taking the drug and call your doctor. Both of these drugs may also appear in breast milk and could affect the nursing infant. Special Information If You Are Pregnant Or BreastfeedingMutagenicity assays did not reveal any valsartan-related effects at either the gene or chromosome level. These assays included bacterial mutagenicity tests with Salmonella (Ames) and E coli; a gene mutation test with Chinese hamster V79 cells; a cytogenetic test with Chinese hamster ovary cells; and a rat micronucleus test. The usual starting dose is 20 milligrams twice a day. Within a week, your doctor may increase the dosage to 40 milligrams twice a day, and continue increasing it up to 160 milligrams twice daily. Diovan PrecautionsOther adverse experiences that occurred in controlled clinical trials of patients treated with Diovan (greater than 0.2% of valsartan patients) are listed below. It cannot be determined whether these events were causally related to Diovan. The maximum dose is 320 milligrams daily. DIOVAN HCT The usual starting dose when switching from Diovan to Diovan HCT is one 80 milligram/12.5 Drugs such as Diovan and Diovan HCT can cause injury or even death to the unborn child when used during the last 6 months of pregnancy. Diovan OverdosageLimited data are available related to overdosage in humans. The most likely manifestations of overdosage would be hypotension and tachycardia; bradycardia could occur from parasympathetic (vagal) stimulation. If symptomatic hypotension should occur, supportive treatment should be instituted. Valsartan is not removed from the plasma by hemodialysis. Valsartan was without grossly observable adverse effects at single oral doses up to 2000 mg/kg in rats and up to 1000 mg/kg in marmosets, except for salivation and diarrhea in the rat and vomiting in the marmoset at the highest dose (60 and 37 times, respectively, the maximum recommended human dose on a mg/m basis). |
